Aim For Unity

Started Tuesday Feb. 17th... It's been awhile since I wrote a post so I thought I would just give you a heads up. To get you thinking, from Paul's letter to the New Testament Corinthian Church, I have been reminded once again how we need to pay attention to matters of church unity. Check it out. 1 Corinthians 1:10 - 17

Continued Monday Feb. 23rd...
Well here we go.......
I really do believe that 'unity matters,' .......really doooo matter.

The Apostle Paul was very concerned in his appeal to the Corinthian church when he called the church in 1 Corinthians 1:10 to be 'perfectly united' in mind and thought. This was a church that had increasingly become crippled by factions and splinter groups formed around certain personalities and favourite preachers. Reports of quarreling, jealousies and disunity had been robbing the Corinthian church of it's potential for greatness.

Paul is reminding the church to pay attention to matters of unity. He is calling them to stay focused on Jesus, the Cross and what matters most. Not to become distracted by debating and arguments that really in the big picture of Christ's church mean little.

The appeal was for restorative action to be taken. To be 'perfectly united' together comes from a medical term that includes in it's meaning the setting or knitting together of a bone that has been broken. It also includes the idea of joints that have been dislocated being put back in place.

Sometimes there is brokenness in the family of God. Sometimes there are dislocations that need to be reset. Sometimes there are relationships that for whatever the reason need to be mended and renewed. It's in these times that we need to work together at unity, not giving up on our relationships. Everyone doing their part and allowing God to bring healing where there has been hurt.

It interesting that as Paul concludes his second letter to the Corinthian church, once again he appeals for unity. 2 Corinthians 13:11-14 Paul is very much aware that God's commanded blessing (Psalm 133) is with those who walk together in unity. This time in his closing thoughts Paul uses the words; 'Aim for perfection.' ......The same Greek tense is used here as in the earlier passage found in 1 Corinthians 1 where Paul calls for the mending and knitting together of the church.

Aim for perfection......implies that we may not always walk in perfect unity or agreement but at least we are aiming for it. We have a valuable target always worth shooting for. Sometimes we fail in matters of unity. We may not always agree on every decision in the life of the church but we choose to continue to walk together in the Spirit of Christ's love and peace.

Why? Because unity really does matter.

"Finally, brother, goodby. Aim for perfection, listen to my appeal, be of one mind, live in peace. And the God of love and peace will be with you. Greet one another with a holy kiss. All the saints send their greetings. May the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you all." 2 Corinthian 13:11-14

Still Aiming!!!!

Grace & Peace

On a lighter note......vote in our poll up in the right hand corner. What is your favourite coffee shop? Now there's a unity matter. It only takes a second to vote.

Boxes of Love Update

Here is a quick update on what was gathered during our God's Glove Initiative. Once again CPC was very generous. Rose McManus and members of her Life Group came in this week and sorted and packed 11 large boxes of goods and clothing intended for the homeless here in the Comox Valley. Much of what came in is brand new.

As some of you know....The Bridge Ministry has found a new temporary place where they can minister to those in need. We will be passing along what has been received to John Enns and those serving in this ministry.

Helping The Homeless

The Comox Valley has a growing and complex homelessness challenge.

As part of our God's Glove Initiative here at CPC we hope to provide for some basic needs to assist in helping those who are most vulnerable. Especially during these cold winter months.

We are exploring various ways our congregation can respond. Below is a letter I received from John Enns; director of the former Bridge Ministry. John has agreed to assist us in getting whatever we can gather to those in need. Brien Hauser, a member of our CPC family is also helping us with this initiative. If you would like to assist with sorting and delivery please let us know. dpostal@cpclife.com

Choose From The List Below
If everyone picked up even a couple of things it would go along way.

Hi Dave; just to thank you and your church for your compassion to our friends. The main need in these wet days is for warm WOOL clothing; socks mainly but also shirts, toques, gloves, underwear, thermal underwear.

Waterproof jackets of good quality, because they sleep, work and live 24/7 in a good one.

Tarps- at least 9' by 12'.
Candles - very valuable- get fat ones that stand by themselves, one buck at dollar store.
Flashlights with good batteries but not too big.
Lighters, matches, soup in a tin you can heat (with candles) and eat.

It is also great to provide personal Christmas Cards written by real humans that say they really do care - because of Jesus. We love, because He first loved us. Love in Him always, John Enns.

Other Possible Items
  • Personal Hygiene Kit Eg. Ziplock Bag: Tooth paste, toothbrush, antibacterial soap, Wash Cloth, Towel
  • Grocery Gift Cards - Ask for card that restricts the purchase of tobacco items.
  • Work Boots - Shawn Wilson director of the Salvation Army Community Care has suggested to us that we help provide work boots where needed as this is often a condition for employment. We hope to use some of our Benevolent funds to help in this area.

Bring Items To CPC By Sunday December 21st

Did You Hear About The Big Give?

Did you here about the Big Give? Last Sunday our CPC Food Bank shopping cart was filled with food. I asked, Dan Doerkson, one of our youth leaders, 'where did that come from?' He proceeded to tell me that one of our Outloud youth, Becca Davis on her own, organized what she called 'The Big Give'. I was very curious and so asked Becca to fill us in. Here's what she wrote:

"Hey PD It was great fun! I was laying awake one night when I started thinking about being in Mexico. (Spring Mission Trip) On our last day of building, we went shopping for the family we had built a home for. We bought food, school supplies, dishes, toys. I remembered how good it felt to give. Then a picture of the empty shopping cart in the foyer at the church popped into my head. I thought it would be a blast to do the "Mexico" style shopping again. So I invited people to join me Nov 1st at QF for some shopping. Shelia Unruh, Aurora Graham, Bekah Olsson, Julie Kervin and myself showed up at QF. Shawna couldn't make it but she did donate some money. Between us, we bought $124 dollars worth of stuff. Shelia said she enjoyed watching us figure out which was a better deal. The bargain of the day: 12 Pack of Chicken Noodle Soup for $0.99! That's right 99 Cents!! I think we are going to try and do this again before Christmas. I'm thinking Dec 20th. We might do it a little bit later so more people can come. We will see. I'll keep you posted on the date.

What a great story and inspiration for us all. Thanks gang for being such a blessing....
